My First Book Reading

It’s Friday. Tomorrow I’m making history…in my family. But, that still counts, right? I’m the first one in my family to have a book reading and signing. So, I’m a history maker. Tomorrow is a dream come true. My first book reading. Even though it’s not my book, it’s my story brought to you in real life. I’m overwhelmed by the awesomeness of the event and just the magnitude of what I’ve accomplished.

I’ve been blogging for a few years now. I’ve shared both my successes and failures with my readers. Many of you that have been with me from the beginning have watched Munch grow up. You were with me through my divorce. You were with me through my parenting struggles. Now, you’ll be with me as I make history tomorrow if even on a small scale.

I’m thankful for the blogging community. It was in this community that KE and I discovered each other. Her writing is thoughtful and open. I found someone who opened up pieces of her life and I was drawn in. So, in this discovery she read my pain when talking about the relationship with my dad and reached out to me about a book she was putting together about father/daughter relationships. I wanted in on this project. My dad and I had a weird relationship and I needed to know that I wasn’t alone.

We all know what the stats say about girls who grow up without their fathers (daddy issues, promiscuous, mental health issues, etc.) and how messed up they are. Even though I experienced a lot of bad things in my youth, having a strong mother helped me to stay on the straight and narrow path. But, my relationships with men sucked. Did you know that every bad thing that has ever happened to me has been at the hands of a man? Damn shame. It’s true though.

That truth was always weird for me to accept because God gave me a son to raise. Why? Healing I’m sure. But, I am thankful for the blessing because Munch is pretty amazing and he’ll be present with me tomorrow at my first book reading. He’ll get to hear his mommy talk about the experiences with her dad and hopefully be able to understand why I wanted him to have a relationship with his dad.

I hope that you will come check it out if you are in the DC area. I would love to see you, sign your book and talk to you. We are going to rock this signing and encourage men to stay in their children’s lives no matter what.
