Today was the first day of school for my munch. He’s now in second grade. It was hard because I’m still wishing my baby didn’t grow up so fast. I mean I feel like I just survived kindergarten. Now, its second grade? Oh vey!
It was a busy first day where I didn’t get to meet his new teacher because I had a 10 am meeting and they hadn’t started by 9:15 a.m. Epic fail on my part because I was rushed getting pictures and it was hot in the gym. Oh and munch didn’t get in the before and after care program at the school because they were full. Imagine that surprise.
So, mommy rushed to the rescue and called the Director who managed the summer camp program he was in to see if they had room in the before and after care program. “Yep” he responded. Can you imagine my relief? Blessings upon blessings because I had no idea what was going to happen after school. The before and after care program picks up and drops off at the school and they are open a half hour later. This was a huge relief.
Munch had hoped for a “boy” teacher and guess what? He got one this year. He is super excited. I know I am. He was ecstatic to see some of the classmates he hadn’t seen since the school year ended. We were all laughing and playing catch-up and promising to schedule play dates. I can’t wait.
On another note, school lunch prices increased this year. The county stated:
“To address the growing costs of providing school meals, the Department of Food and Nutrition Services will now charge $1.60 for full-price breakfast, $0.30 for reduced-price breakfast, $2.75 for full-price lunch, and $0.40 for reduced-price lunch for elementary students. Meals for middle and high school students is $1.60 for full-price breakfast, $0.30 for reduced-price breakfast, $3.00 for full-price lunch, and $0.40 for reduced-price lunch.”
That’s $21.75 a week for breakfast and lunch for munch. An increase of almost 11% because we don’t qualify for free or reduced lunch. I wasn’t too thrilled about the increase (although I understand it) and we will pack lunch at least 3 times a week. I need him to eat responsibly like he did with summer. I pack lunchables, veggies, fruits, etc. I need to think economically this year.
Finally, I’ve signed him back up for swim lessons that start next month and we’re going to enroll him in Tae Kwan Do at the studio instead of in school because the classes are smaller and we think that munch could benefit from a more focused class lesson. No other sports until the spring when we add soccer back.
