I’m reading everything and anything about what is best for your children and they are suggesting music should be introduced now. More specifically playing instruments. I know. I know. I’m textbook. But, hear me out.
I like music. I wish that I could play an instrument. I wish I had learned. I want Munch to learn to play an instrument. I want him to find an outlet that makes him happy. So, I asked him “Do you want to learn to play an instrument?” He got excited and then cautiously asked, “Why?”
Only my child right? I said, “This is the age where students learn. Is there anything you want to learn to play?” He responded, “Yes, the guitar.”
Really kid? The guitar?
He said he wants to be a rock star. He vetoed the flute, saxophone, violin, piano, trombone and anything else I suggested. The guitar.
Guess what? I’m looking into guitar lessons. Yep. I’m going to try this.
let him play around! no perfection, no pressure, just play. and bang, and hum, and sing, and have fun…

also, i know you probably don’t want advice, but –
the guitar is quite hard and you don’t want him to start and then give up because his fingers are too small. (which they probably are)
encourage him to play – definitely – but in a wild fun no rules kinda way!
there…

LOL. I truly appreciate all advice Violet. Thank you so much or the suggestion. Laurel suggested a 3 string guitar, but I will definitely let him try multiple instruments at his will. I don’t think it’s a big deal if he decides later that he won’t do it. I’m okay with it. I just want him to decide whether or not he likes it.

You could get him a three-stringed guitar. His little fingers could probably master that. Small children learn to play the piano with not much trouble….so I would say “let him play around” and see what happens. 🙂

Thanks so much. I will definitely do that. I never even knew about a 3 stringed guitar.

Will you remove one of the other activities, or is this in addition to?

LOL. In addition too. I’ve restructured his schedule where he takes swim year round and will now take Tae Kwan Do only during the school year in after care not in the evenings. Soccer is a Spring sport only. So, swim is weekly beginning in the fall on Saturdays.

This makes me SO happy! I love when parents bring music into their children’s lives. I wish I had learned an instrument when I was young, too. If I had children, I’d definitely give them the opportunity. I love love love that you asked him what he wanted to play. You’re awesome!

Yep, I didn’t want to overload him and I wanted him to decide it. No big deal if he tries and then realizes he doesn’t like it or wants to move to something different. I’m okay with that. I just want to give him a creative outlet.

Look at it this way…..sure beats a drum set. Either way, learning an instrument is better than learning emoji’s and the latest in Minecraft.

LOL. Drums are loud. But, if he wants to do it, I will support that too.

Anyway…if the little dude wants to play music…you’re on the right track letting him try whatever he wants!
